SmartLawn Irrigation Information

Irrigation Types Used at SmartLawn

There are two general categories of irrigation used in the SmartLawn demonstration.

#1: Overhead Rotator Stream Irrigation

SmartLawn utilizes rotator nozzle sprinklers, which are more water efficient than spray nozzles in urban landscapes. Rotator nozzle sprinklers put out multiple streams of water at varying distances while simultaneously rotating in a stationary body. For more information describing sprinkler head types, visit this link. SmartLawn currently uses the following overhead rotator irrigation products.

#2: Subsurface  Irrigation

SmartLawn demonstrates two subsurface irrigation products.

  • XFS Subsurface Dripline is a Rain Bird subsurface irrigation product that can reduce irrigation by as much as 70% compared to traditional overhead irrigation. XFS Sub-Surface Dripline also features emitters are protected from root intrusion by Rain Bird’s patent-pending Copper Shield™ Technology, as well as a low-profile emitter design to reduce in-line water pressure loss.

  • Eco-Mat is novel, subsurface irrigation product carried by Hunter Industries. Eco-mat uses an engineered combination of inline emitter tubing connected to a fleece mat, which evenly disperses water from under the surface of the soil. The wrap and mat material are composed of PET (Polyethylene terephthalate) - a material which aids in capillary water movement while also holding water for future use.
