UC Verde Buffalograss
WATER-CONSERVING LAWNS AND LANDSCAPES
Researchers at UC Riverside have shown that a buffalograss cultivar can make a thick, green, drought-tolerant lawn for California's hot, dry summers. Promoting a more sustainable turf solution is part of the mission of CCUH, and that's why we've partnered with Florasource, Ltd. to bring this alternative turfgrass option to the public.
Research
‘UC Verde’ ® Buffalograss was compared to a number of other types of turf grass in a series of trials to evaluate it's ability to fill in from plugs and maintain its color and quality on low water while mowed at two different heights. ‘UC Verde’ came out the winner.

Home Landscape Use
‘UC Verde’ ® buffalograss may be mowed as a lawn or left long (4-6") for a landscape meadow. Unlike other lawns, this grass requires only once a week watering during the warm season to maintain its appearance. Since it is slow to put on height, mowing the lawn is necessary only once every two to three weeks. The meadow look is maintained with only once a year mowing to reinvigorate it. Public Landscape Use
The new Graduate School of Management at UC Davis integrated UC Verde buffalograss into their landscape as part of their LEED Gold certification with the U.S. Green Building Council.
Below is a picture of the lawn area after plugs were planted. Typical warm weather fill-in takes place in a matter of weeks.
