Global Climate Change and Your Backyard

Tour Details

arboConference participants are welcome to attend the optional garden tours on Saturday May 31, 2008 from 7:45-9:30 AM.  The tours will focus on two exemplary gardens in the UC Davis Arboretum, the Mary Wattis Brown Garden of California Native Plants and the Ruth Risdon Storer Garden – a Valley-Wise Garden.  Both of these gardens are a tangible demonstration of choosing the “right plant for the right place”, a focal point of our conference.  Tour participants will be amazed at the plant diversity, color and habitat created in these gardens with little maintenance and very little water.

The Mary Wattis Brown Garden of California Native Plants includes drought-tolerant species suitable for landscape plantings as well as a number of rare and endangered plants. It showcases an extensive collection of California wild lilac (Ceanothus) and a planting of native bunchgrasses.

The Ruth Risdon Storer Garden – a Valley-Wise Garden features flowering perennials and small shrubs that are especially well suited to central valley gardens. It is designed for year-round color with low water use and minimal maintenance. A new addition is a demonstration planting of roses and companion plants.
